Hg2 : The Hedonist

Café Maure

This peaceful mosque, founded in 1920, and adjacent to the Institut du Monde Arabe, is open to both Muslims and non-Muslims, who come largely to enjoy the bookshop, hammam and tearoom. During the summer, you can sip your thé à la menthe in a lovely tree-shaded courtyard and read or chat to the sound of birdsong; in winter, it’s all about lounging on cushioned benches among horseshoe arches, pot-bellied lamps and copper tray tables. Friendly waiters pour the sugary fresh-mint tea from a great height into traditional tea glasses, and keep the calorific, sticky pastries coming. It’s an escapist experience, owing to the mosque’s Moorish architecture; Moroccan, Algerian and Tunisian craftsmen were employed in creating the interior, with its polychrome faience tiles, porphyry stone fountains and cedarwood doors.
