Café no Chiado
One of Lisbon’s affordable bistros, Café no Chiado is an oasis of calm in Lisbon’s trendiest shopping district. Civilised but informal surroundings attract a light-lunch crowd of local workers and media types, who meet to discuss business over a glass of white wine and muted jazz.
A menu of salads, steaks, quiche and sandwiches is as refreshingly unpretentious as the clientele and it certainly won’t burn a hole in your pocket. Outdoor seating on the cobbled leafy esplanade offers a welcome escape from the blazing midday sun and one of the quietest spots in central Lisbon.
After the lunch crowd have disappeared, students and young intellectuals while away the afternoon with a coffee and a good book. There’s an impressive range of Portuguese and foreign newspapers on offer and internet access is available at the Ciber Chiado upstairs.
