Café Oliver

This international restaurant in Madrid is famous for its Sunday brunch though Café Oliver is rarely quiet at any time. Enthusiasm for the restaurant is fuelled by the credentials of the owners, who’ve worked with the likes of Conran. The décor at Cafe Oliver is simple but stylish, with a mixture of bare brick and painted walls, large mirrors, old-style advertisements and exposed beams. The restaurant is on a corner and has windows on two sides, making it bright, airy and cheery during the day. Friendly, good-looking and mostly English-speaking staff are dressed in black t-shirts and khaki aprons, adding to the place’s New York vibe. The menu is international, with a set lunch that changes daily. Pastas and risottos are served in miniature saucepans, keeping them piping hot, but the most popular dish is the steak tartar. You can’t book for brunch, which normally consists of fried eggs, bacon and orange juice, but bookings are recommended at all other times. After dinner, head downstairs to the Chivas Bar, a chilled out spot in an arched basement cave
