Café Thijssen
This ‘gezellig’ (it’s Dutch for cosy) neighbourhood cafe sits on an enviable corner in the Jordaan, with the picturesque Brouwersgracht on one side, and the broad Lindengracht (with all its other equally-gezellig brown cafes) to the other. In summer, the terrace on the Lindengracht is always popular, but large enough to mean you stand a good chance of getting a seat. Inside, the sunken bar offers a quirky arrangement, and the predominant design theme is dark, slightly worn mahogany. It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon spot for that, with Dutch papers scattered about across the central table. During the evenings it’s always packed, generally with a crowd of youngish Jordaan locals, and with old soul and funk being played by the DJs (who, as is the case across Amsterdam, occasionally veers into disco cheese). There’s a decent menu, available from 9am.
