Hg2 : The Hedonist

Caffe Neo

Virtually across the road from Mouille Point’s squat red-and-white candy-striped lighthouse, with great sea views, sits one of the funkiest little family-run cafes in Cape Town, which has diverse fans. A long timber table dominates the indoor space – here the mobile office brigade use the free (but sometimes unreliable) Wi-Fi, sipping their lattes whilst scanning the room over the top of their laptops. Waiters, in jeans and branded T-shirts, place orders on your behalf, summoning up breakfasts, crisp salads, sandwiches, mezze platters, keftedes, pasticcio, and other Aegean specialties (it’s Greek-owned, after all) chalked up on the wall. Around you, the look is a semi-cluttered jumble of breezy contemporary design and off-set with the intensely personal: a central pillar with shelves features books and family photographs. Outside, on the wooden deck, things are breezier, with chrome and plastic designer chairs and views over the parking lot to Mouille Point’s grass-covered promenade and the ocean beyond. This is the ideal spot to touch base with Cape Town’s laidback approach to a busy day, prompting that much-asked question: ‘Does anyone in this city actually work?’
