Cape Town Jazz Festival
Many would hail this as the best live music in Cape Town. Considered amongst the five best music festivals on the planet (ahead of Switzerland’s Montreaux Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands), this is one event that lives up to its billing as ‘Africa’s Grandest Gathering’ – the line-up of key international jazz musicians is small but stellar, and the commitment to sharing the schedule equally between African artists and performers from the rest of the world creates a magical cultural balance. Performances happen in and around the Cape Town International Convention Centre, where there are several indoor performance stages as well as outdoor arenas (the largest space caters to 3,500 spectators) where the atmosphere is more geared towards partying. Since its inception in 2000, the festival has virtually doubled in size, attracting over 33,000 spectator and revellers in 2009. You can purchase either a day ticket, or for a few extra rand, get entry for both days. There’s also a free concert, enabling the community to check out a sampling of acts, usually in Greenmarket
rnSquare on the Thursday before the main festival kicks off.
