Catedral Primada

The cathedral is the biggest in Colombia and one of the largest in SouthrnAmerica, and is the site of all major funerals, marriages and staternceremonies, so it should definitely be on your things to do in Bogotá list. When the Spanish first founded Bogota (in place of the indigenous site Bacata) they celebrated their first holy mass in 1538 in a modest thatched-roof chapel on the site of the current Cathedral Prima. A more elaborate building was first built here in 1553 and the tower was completed in 1678. However, a strong earthquake shook the cathedral’s foundations to the core leaving part of the site demolished, and the current cathedral was not built until 1807-1823. Catedral Primada is a prime example of neoclassical architecture and contains a classical basilica formation in the shape of a cross as well as 14 chapels and two towers. Inside, the atrium is wonderfully high and stunning white pillars lead to the gold altar. Catedral Primada also holds the remains of Gonzola Jimenez de Quesada, founder of Bogota, and is the seat of the archbishop of Bogota.
