Centro Cultural
The brick structure of the Centro Cultural Gabriel Garcia Marquez itself incorporates a wonderful spiral walkway that is architecturally stunning, and provides a magnificent view of Candelaria – a trip here is one of the best things to do in Bogotá. The building was designed by one of South America’s most famous architects, Reglio Salmona, who laced the Centro Cultural with small waterfalls and channels of water. The Centro Cultural Gabriel Garcia Marquez includes a large library of over 50,000 books that is a powerful collection of Colombian and South American literature. In addition, the space also holds a 200-square-metre gallery that exhibits a mix of national and international artists and first opened in 2004 with ‘Gabo del Alma’ (the soul of Gabo), an exhibition that depicted the life of Gabirel Garcia Marquez. The area where the Centro Cultural stands was badly affected by El Bogotazo, and so the dynamic structure is a proud symbol of Colombia’s political and cultural advancement.
