Centro de Arte Moderna
Certainly one of the finest art galleries in Lisbon the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian’s Modern Art Centre opened in 1983 and contains the country’s largest and finest collection of 20th-century Portuguese art, including pieces from defining artist Amadeo de Souza Cardosa. An exhibition of British art also dates from the 1960s.

rnWorthy of mention is Amadeo and Antonio Areal’s interpretation of Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, part of Areal’s showing at the 9th Sao Paulo Biennial in 1967. The Foundation gardens also contain several sculptures organized in an art trail, and make for a pleasant summer stroll. Guided tours in English can be booked. A joint ticket may be purchased for the neighbouring Gulbenkian Museum, which houses a mammoth collection of Western and Eastern art.
