Hg2 : The Hedonist

Cervejaria Trindade

Sure, it’s ever-so slightly touristy, but locals have been coming to this monastery-turned-brewery-turned-restaurant since 1294 so it has a definite place in the hearts of Lisboetas as well as guidebook wielding tourists. The food is as authentically Portuguese as you’ll find in this town. All the family dig their hands into the mounds of shellfish that’s ferried to the table by the platter. Prawns, clams, crab, lobster and the alien-looking goose barnacles are favourites.

But the real local dish to try here is bitoque – fried minute steak on bed of chips, topped with a fried egg. Being an old brewery, the in-house beer is excellent: crisp, light and served brain-freeze cold.

The décor is worth the visit alone. The grand high-ceilings swallow up the hums of pleasure that ascend from the dinner tables, while the blue azulejo tiles that spread across the walls display the colourful history of an establishment that’s been here for over 700 years.
