Hg2 : The Hedonist

Chez Bruce

It’s hardly a hot ticket for celeb spotters, and even the sunniest optimist couldn’t describe it as central, but Bruce Poole’s restaurant in Wandsworth has people flocking from across the capital with the goal of dining out in London. Poole has been here since 1995 and his French-meets-Mediterranean food – honest, hearty and high-end in equal measure – is hard to fault. The menu changes daily to make the most of seasonality and freshness, with regular highs that include a fantastic foie gras parfait.¬†Front of house, there’s crisp linen, spot-on service, and a smart but informal atmosphere that makes Chez Bruce feel more like a neighbourhood brasserie than the Michelin-starred dining room that it is – the only downside is that some tables can be a little cramped. Add one of London’s best cheese boards and a brilliant wine list from the restaurant’s youthful Canadian sommelier, Terry Threlfall, and Chez Bruce is close to perfect. Sit at the front, and the view out across Wandsworth Common might even make you forget you’re in London.
