Hg2 : The Hedonist

Chez Jeannette

A shabby-chic (it really is both) zinc bar, bought from the eponymous Jeannette by a hip young cabal, this neon-lit hang-out serves trad French fare by day, chalked up on the blackboard – assiette de charcuterie, bavette poelée – and switches into party mode by night and at the weekend. Opposite Passage Brady, where Indian restaurants compete for trade, its decaying interior is reminiscent of cafés found today only in Havana or Mumbai. The clientele’s average age has plummeted since the trendy takeover, but nothing much else has changed, from the yellowing wallpaper to the Chez Jeannette sign over the bar. Come for a plate of cheese and a pichet de blanc around 6 or 7pm, while it’s still easy-going and you can squeeze into a booth at the back; return later to see it kick off, socially speaking.
