Chinese Restaurant 1997
No need to tell you when this Soho Chinese first opened for business, a particularly good year for London restaurants it would seem, with Nobu and Momo also opening. Over a decade later and perhaps it’s not held up as well as its famous classmates but Cantonese pop still tinkles from the jukebox and the portraits of Karl Marx and Chairman Mao are still on the walls. The menu is still packed with simple Cantonese staples. It’s also still open until the wee hours and has service that’s a lot friendlier and more accommodating than much of that on offer over in Chinatown. Jonas Karisson, executive chef of Harvey Nicks Fifth Floor, does a bit of post work bonding with his kitchen crew there and declares it, great for after service with the team”. Bet it is.”
