Hg2 : The Hedonist

La Mamounia’s signature watering hole, Churchill’s Piano Bar, has survived the venue’s famed refurbishment virtually intact – well, aside from a new carpet, different coloured leather and some new furniture courtesy of designer Jacques Garcia and is one of the great places to drink in Marrakech. You’ll still need to dress smartly if you want to get in to¬†Churchill’s Piano Bar, or the slightly sniffy doormen will turn you away. It’s part gentleman’s club, part jazz club, and its interior is designed in a classic art-deco-meets-jazz style – soft leather chairs and wall-coverings, a semi-private drinking room off the main bar area, a grand piano in a shallow pit, and runs of bar stools. This is all gently illuminated by backlit painted glass that features colourful pictures of famous jazz legends and can look spookily ecclesiastical after a couple of the right drinks. The bar opens at 6pm each night, plays music (jazz) from 9pm and sells classic whiskies, long drinks, draught and bottled beer and cigars. It’s often very quiet but occasionally surprisingly busy – when the film festival is in town, for example.
