Cio Cio San
Named after the eponymous heroine of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, Cio Cio San is a very good high-end Japanese just around the corner from the Jazz Centre. Design is strong and the backlit shoji-style wall in particular lends anrneffective, ‘faux-authentic’ touch. Waiters memorise your order, which is all well and good if their memories are spot on, but occasional mishaps do occur. Indeed, the service aims high, but occasionally falls just short of its mark, a criticism that could be applied also to the food. The menu reads excitingly and dishes are generally prepared to an extremely high standard, however some dishes are not quite there – a scallop, just a tad over-cooked, a few stray seeds or a smear of sauce on an otherwise cleanly presented dish – but these are tiny quibbles and a meal here is a perfectly enjoyable, if not enjoyably perfect, night out.
