CitizenM touts itself as a new ‘concept’ hotel. Ugh, say we. Thankfully, the basic premise – exchange money for shelter – is exactly the same as every other hotel in the world. Beyond that, it offers ‘affordable luxury’, and boutique flourishes, despite being in what looks like an uninspiring office block. The reception area and bar/café areas are filled with lovely, quirky design furniture, and the rooms are like little space age cabins of compact comfort. You get a double bed, a flat screen TV and cylindrical see-through shower unit, squeezed cunningly into about 2.5m by 4-5m. Some bits are frustrating – they won’t take bookings over the phone, and the website is a victory of Flash over function – but you’ll struggle to find better for the money anywhere in the city, and you feel cooler for staying here – a concept that might catch on. Its location may put some off, but it’s only 10-15 minutes to the centre by tram.
