Hg2 : The Hedonist

City Social

With its dark herringbone floors and brown leather banquettes, City Social channels the 80s machismo of The City with aplomb. Set against the striking glass-and-steel vista of modern London, as seen through its massive windows on the 24th floor of Tower 42, dining here is a bold experience.

City Social is a venture from much-lauded chef Jason Atherton, and one that has paid off, with the restaurant now officially anointed with a Michelin star. Day by day, however, it’s Executive Chef Paul Walsh at the helm. Having cut his teeth at The Savoy, he’s no stranger to serving and creating exemplary cuisine. The City Social’s menu is largely European in influence, offering a tantalising range of dishes, from Tidenham duck breast (served with amarena cherry, pistachio yogurt, five spice, and dried vinegar) to ravioli of mushroom and quail egg, with truffle mashed potatoes and mushroom salad.

The Prohibition-inspired cocktail menu, meanwhile, is playful and imaginative. Highlights include the “Oh My Gourd!”, a smile-inducing concoction of pumpkin-infused Tapatio Blanco tequila, lychee, lime, and agave syrup with a pumpkin crisp, and considerate non-alcoholic options, like the “Due Dill-igence” (a muddle of elderflower, cucumber and dill, among other refreshing tastebud pleasers). Despite its culinary reputation and steely surroundings, City Social still knows how to have fun.
