The Club Ms Mae’s
The red neon sign lets you know that you’ve arrived at Ms Mae’s – one of New Orleans’ best loved dive bars – but step inside and certainty vanishes. The world outside fades to a gentle hum of traffic, just heard beneath the clink of glasses and the sound of an NFL game on the TV. This is a place of cheap drinks, dim lighting, and air hockey.
Found Uptown, Ms Mae’s is often the start or end point of bar crawls along Magazine Street, which probably explains the bar’s online “Wall of Shame”. What else would you expect from a bar you can visit any time of the day or night and put away $2 shots? But it’s not just the 24/7 opening hours that appeal to denizens of Ms Mae’s. Although that doesn’t hurt. Or the free-flowing drinks (if you’ve got the cash – no cards are accepted here). But rather the fact that you never know what kind of crowd you’re going to get here. Be it students on a night out, shift workers having a cold one in the early hours, or New Orleans’ Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan buying a celebratory round after a win.
All you can be sure of at Ms Mae’s is that the drinks will be simple and cheap (don’t bother asking for a cocktail) and the atmosphere will be memorable. There’s a reason it’s on more than one NOLA bucket list.
