Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels
With a branch already thriving in the French capital, Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels has reproduced its winning formula of high-end wine and beautifully prepared rustic-style French fare in the heart of London.
The Seven Dials outpost, nestled in a corner of Covent Garden’s esoteric Neal’s Yard, may be somewhat tricky to find, but its location on this tiny, colourful square ultimately adds to its charm. Safely ensconced from the never-ending bustle of the area’s main streets, this unpretentious wine bar evokes an old world, intimate feel with a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The bar’s seating extends out into the courtyard, perfect for warm summer evenings where a bottle of wine with friends is the ideal after-work antidote.
As you might expect from a wine bar dreamt up by the minds behind the Experimental Cocktail Club, there’s a curated, thoughtful collection of wine available by the bottle and by the glass at Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels. And, deliciously, a menu of small plates as well, offering perfectly presented and prepared dishes ranging from crispy pig croquettes with Jerusalem artichoke to Cornish crab and avocado with brioche and yuzu. There’s even a finger-licking selection of charcuterie and cheese, as is only right in a spot with such a chic Parisian aesthetic.
Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels’ Parisian service is unrushed, but informative, with the staff happy to discuss the wine on offer and give some guidance. For those feeling lucky, order the mystery bottle and keep your fingers crossed.
