This cozy spot on the quiet end of Hollywood Boulevard has worked its way into the hearts of grape lovers all over town, and for good reason. Lancaster has created a beautiful yet accessible environment where patrons both knowledgeable and clueless can be surprised with a new and excellent glass of wine every time they come in. There is no written menu – the selection is fluid so you’ll have to chat with your bartenders when you arrive. But that’s the best part. Every bartender at Covell knows as much about wine as a sommelier and is genuinely delighted to guide you in your quest to find that perfect glass (yes, this means you get to taste) out of the 100 or so choices they have to offer at any given time. Lancaster himself can often be found behind the bar chatting with customers and helping newcomers discover the gems in his collection. This attitude of friendly exploration will put you instantly at ease, as will the rustic décor such as the reclaimed wooden bar and a vintage camera collection installed on the wall. A small menu of cheese and meats and rotating small plates compliments the revolving wine selection. Also on tap are several craft beers and microbrews, so don’t let your non-wine drinking friends spoil your shot at mixing in with the East Side Intelligentsia.
