Daddy Cool Bar
Interior designer Tracy Lynch mixed updated classicism with some fun riffs from the dubious postmodern stylings of gangster rappers-so expect to see gigantic gold Rolex watches and dollar signs as part of the tongue-in-cheek décor of one of the quaintest cocktail bars in Cape Town, alongside unique gold prints by artist Brand Botes. Classic armchairs are refurbished in white leather, and there’s more white used to accent elements within the original Victorian-era room design. Chandelier are jangly mother of pearl discs, and everywhere there’s a golden-hued chimera which is designed to dazzle once you’ve settled in for a night of fun, perhaps accompanied by live music by smaller-name local bands (Wednesdays and Thursday). Things get more fired up at weekends thanks to a DJ-induced party atmosphere. The crowd that pulls in here tends to be pretty trendy, and naughty enough to have stolen one or two pieces of art from the walls of the entranceway, which – just to put you in the mood – features plasma TVs in gold frames that comprise the city’s only digital art gallery. More interesting, however, is the aquarium in the men’s bathroom, meaning you look though the watery collection of tropical fish whilst using the urinal.
