Daguanlou
The first cinema in China, Daguanlou (literally, The Grand View House) underwent an extensive RMB 5 million renovations in 2005 to mark the 100th anniversary of Chinese cinema. During the Qing dynasty the emperor tried to quell the influence of this foreign art form by banning photography and prohibiting men and women from sitting together. The 19th century façade has been preserved but the interior has been rebuilt to recreate its original ambiance. Old advertisements and movie posters as well as oil lamps dot the first floor. Dagaunlou was also responsible for bringing the first 3-D movies to China in the 1960s, which attracted over four million viewers. Today you can enjoy Hollywood blockbusters both dubbed and with Chinese subtitles while drinking local beer and snacking on popcorn.
