An oasis of calm in a crazy city full of odours and noise, Dar
Cherifa has to be experienced at least once during a trip to the Medina. It is
one of the most majestic riads in town, founded by Abdelatif Ben Abdellah (of
Marrakech Riads fame – their offices are upstairs), who has transformed the
place into an art gallery, library and general shrine to inner peace. Visiting
the place, with its elegant columns, relaxation salons and tranqil,
contemplative atmosphere, is like receiving an architectural massage.
Exhibitions change every few weeks and vary in theme (and quality), but there
is a permanent photography exhibit (upstairs) that documents the sensitive
restoration of the space three years ago. There’s also a small but perfectly formed library of
books on Moroccan and French culture, and you can take a mint tea or coffee
here for 20dh. In the evenings, the owners are
experienting with themed food evenings (every night except Wednesday – see
website for more details).
