Dar Si Said
Just around the corner from the Maison Tiskiwin, this palace was built in the late 19th century by Si Said, Grand Vizier under Moulay Hassan, the last effective sultan of pre-colonial Morocco. It’s now home to the Museum of Moroccan Arts, whose exhibits include a display of Berber daggers and jewelry made of amber, ivory, and silver; beautiful carpets from the High Atlas; woodwork from the 18th and 19th centuries Taroudannt oil lamps; Marrakchi leatherwork, and distinctive pottery from Safi and Zagoura. It feels like a strangely unadorned and unloved place these days, but the artefacts are definitely worth investigating and the courtyards and gardens are pleasant. Look out for the 11th-century rectangular marble basin, the oldest and most treasured piece here. It was originally transported from Islamic Spain by the Almoravids and left undamaged for centuries. Exhibit descriptions are in Arabic and French only.
