Hg2 : The Hedonist

Daylesford Organic

Lifestyle envy is a highly profitable syndrome, as the folk behind Daylesford Organic (namely Lord and Lady Bamford of JCB riches) have realised with this popular combination of shops and delis in London. Their 4,500 square-foot lifestyle emporium is a gorgeous, blonde temple to all you need to buy for a life just like theirs – ie, super-chic, super-pricey eco-luxury. Straight from the organic fields of Daylesford’s Gloucestershire farm are three floors of seasonal groceries, dairy goods and heritage breed meats (including Gloucester Old Spots and venison), plus artisan homewares, organic and biodynamic wines from the Bamford’s Provence estate, and, crucially, the chance to taste the Bamford ‘brand experience’ at the cafe. It’s too much for Belgravia’s bourgeoisie to resist, as furs, cosmetic surgery and new teeth settle round the communal table for excellent salads, wild-caught fish, posh sandwiches, homemade cakes and louder-than-necessary posturing. To compare and contrast the moneyed construct of Daylesford with the reality of British farming, visit on a Saturday morning when the Pimlico farmers’ market is in full swing. Daylesford now also has a three-floor cafe/store in Notting Hill that includes a raw bar (208 Westbourne Grove, W11; 020 7313 8050) and a takeaway deli at Selfridges’ Food Hall (see Shop).
