Café De Duivel
The Netherlands is not known as a hotbed of hip-hop, and what it produces tends to have an old school American sound with Dutch lyrics slapped on top (search for Nederhop on Youtube to have a listen). But what there is gets celebrated here, along with rap and hip hop from across the world. Duivel was one of the city’s first DJ bars (it opened nearly 20 years ago) and remains the only spot in town dedicated to hip-hop, sometimes with live performances. As a result, this small, studiedly scruffy spot is busy whenever its open, filled with the city’s hip-hop loving crowd. It’s a pretty friendly venue, and a welcome change in musical tone from the uniform taste for house that pervades most of Amsterdam’s clubs.
