Opened in 2005, De Prague brings to Hamra a café, bookstore and bar in Beirut that is much needed in terms of vibe, style and quality. Formerly the Rose & Crown Pub, the large square space was gutted and refitted with simple sofas, antique furniture, candles and mirrors to give it a homey, casual feel. With student art on the walls, and fresh coffee and cakes from the kitchen, and a straightforward bar and DJs in the evenings, De Prague is the Hamra stop-off for a funky young scene. And it feels good. With luck, this should trigger a revitalization of the neighbourhood, as happened in Gemayzeh; we hope more such places will arrive soon. On Sundays the management shows art-house films on a huge projector screen. Unsurprisingly the crowd is an arty one – primarily creatives and students generating an energetic atmosphere. The perfect place for lounging on long Sunday afternoons.
