Hg2 : The Hedonist

De Young Museum

The De Young museum is a stunner inside and out, a highlight of all the museums in San Francisco. The exterior is a new city landmark, the extensive collection of art and artifacts from cultures around the world is displayed to perfection, and the chic cafe makes a perfect setting in which to reflect. The de Young attracts world-class travelling exhibitions, but its permanent collection is definitely worth exploring. It includes one of the finest collections of American paintings in the United States, from colonial times through the 20th century; extensive collections of Oceanic artworks and artifacts from the Pacific; African art; art of the Americas; American craft and sculpture; and more. If you feel like the Thames should be over your shoulder, that’s because the designers of the Tate Modern, Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron (along with Fong & Chan in San Francisco), also designed this space. The exhibition schedule is also always cutting-edge.
