Mid-range, and in a less exclusive part of town, this department store is nevertheless very central. Clothes range from own brand to designer, and there are also cosmetics, glass and a good music department. Bear in mind the fact that you can have a facial on the top floor in the Åhléns Day Spa.

Stockholm’s designer haven, packed to overflowing with expensive boutiques. If you’re willing to flex the plastic, then this is the place to come – the city’s answer to Selfridges or Harvey Nichols. Selling everything you’d expect, from cosmetics and accessories to Versace dresses, the store itself is a pleasure to wander round. It is elegantly designed, with an atrium that looks up from the basement to all the departments. The top floor houses one of the best English bookshops in town, while Café Entre downstairs provides light relief from the heavy expenditure. Only the knowledge that NK was the scene of the tragic stabbing of Swedish Foreign Minister, Anna Lindh, in autumn 2003 could mar your enjoyment of the place.
