Hg2 : The Hedonist

Dobra Cajovna

Hidden in a little courtyard just off Wenceslas Square, this is easily one of the best tea houses in Prague. The exterior is inconspicuous, but pass through the gates and courtyard, and you’ll enter a spotlessly clean, dimly lit room dotted with people chatting away or quietly lost in books.

Ambient, nu-age tunes wash over the clientele, creating a reasonably surreal setting when contrasted with the cacophony of the square outside. Mobile phones and smoking are banned to maintain the purity, and the tea menu stretches on for an eternity.

The choice is spectacular – teas from the Americas, Africa and the East; white teas, green teas, black teas, red teas – all presented in a huge book and featuring wry, in-depth descriptions. Once you’ve chosen, ring the itsy bell on your tea-crate table and the waiter will appear to take your order.

Feeling peckish? The menu stretches Middle-Eastern style dips and breads, although the kitchen can rustle up bigger portions on request. If you feel like kicking off your shoes and sipping something refreshing while reading a book or having a calm chat, this is one of the best places in Prague to do it.
