Doga Balik
Another of Istanbul’s top fish restaurants, Doa Balik is found above the Hotel Villa Zurich in trendy central Cihangir, which locals describe as an odd location for a fish restaurant as it’s ‘in town’ as opposed to being on the seashore, which is all of five minutes away. Happily, this means it’s in easy reach if you’re hanging around Beyolu. A mesmerising view across the water to Sultanahmet is merely a bonus. The real draw is the simply served but delicious meze and fish. A particular speciality is vegetarian meze that run to around 50 awesome dishes including a score of different steamed greens, seaweeds and herbs in olive oil (which makes Doa Balik an excellent vegetarian option, too). As for the fish, try some grilled bonito, bream or bluefish with onions and herbs. Diners should be aware of an all too frequent gross up-selling, however – the waiter’s description of a table-sized turbot may sound good but can make for a shock when you divvy up the bill later that night. This naughtiness aside, it’s a sure-fire bet.
