Dramaten
Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern, commonly known as Dramaten, is Sweden’s National Theatre. It occupies a beautiful white marble building dating from1908 on Nybroplan, and is built in Jugendstil, the Scandinavian version of Art Nouveau. This is the theatre that was, for many years, the artistic home of Ingmar Bergman (he was the theatre’s director 1960-66, and its manager1963-66) while alumni from the acting school include Greta Garbo and Max von Sydow (the actor who played chess with Death in Bergman’s The Seventh Seal). These days productions range from the classics to contemporary Swedish and foreign dramas, including plays for children, though most performances are, of course, in Swedish. Occasionally there are also concerts here (Rufus Wainwright played several nights in 2008). Outside the building you’ll see a life-sized bronze statue of Margaretha Krook, who was one of Sweden’s greatest actresses. Feel free to pat her tummy – she is Stockholm’s only heated statue.
