Egerton House
Contemporary isn’t a word you’d use to describe this five-star townhouse hotel. Instead, the management aims to transport guests back to a more discerning age with impeccable, old-school service. Guests are greeted with a chilled glass of champagne (or a more genteel pot of tea) by a butler only too happy to unpack your luggage should sir or madam so wish. At bedtime, you’ll find Fragonard candles gently flickering in your room and a warm bathrobe, slippers and an evening newspaper by the super-comfy Savoir bed. The 28 guestrooms are decorated in lavish period fashion (richly patterned fabrics, antique furniture, frothy curtains) and the walls are lined with original engravings and lithographs by the likes of Picasso and Matisse. However, there are also a few discreet high-tech additions such as video-iPods (pre-programmed with content of your choice) and flatscreen TVs in both the bedroom and bathroom. But it’s unlikely you’ll spend much time channel- hopping. As well as London’s most famous museums, department stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols and the designer boutiques of Sloane Street are a short stroll away. Not sure what to buy? The hotel’s personal shopper will come with you. It’s all part of the service.
