Hg2 : The Hedonist

Elite Café

The Elite is the most unabashedly old school of all places to eat in San Francisco. Tiny mahogany booths with curtains offer privacy of the Prohibition Era ilk, while an oyster bar and Art Deco tile and fixtures suggest Belle Epoque Paris. So when the Cajun-influenced cuisine arrives, it may be slightly disorienting. Think New Orleans pre-Katrina and it will all make sense. In the evenings, the bar gets packed with beautiful people from the surrounding posh neighbourhood letting their hair down, but the best thing on offer is still the blackened steak, done with plate-scraping-good Southern butter sauce. Be sure to indulge in the biscuits, a house favourite, in addition to such specialities as crayfish bisque, hominy-crusted catfish, and fried green tomatoes.
