One of Germany’s top chefs, Thomas Kurt hopes to rid fine dining of its exclusive image with his new restaurant in the Berlin ETA Hoffman hotel. His first step has been to introduce reasonable prices without compromising on the quality of ingredients. Several set menus are on offer, although the three-course vegetarian one – practically unheard of in Berlin – is what he’s most proud of. So far, Kurt’s efforts have been met with success borne out in the fact the restaurant is consistently busy. In winter, the bright yellow walls and hanging artworks lift the spirits, while in the warmer summer months the outdoor terrace is perfect for pre-prandial aperitifs. The clientele remain elegant and upmarket, despite the bargain price tags, which entice in younger gourmets with tighter purse strings. Extremely helpful staff round off an evening worth a million dollars, at a fraction of the price. Chef Thomas Kurt and his kitchen are awarded maximum marks for effort.
