Most plantation homes were built in the 1800s as mansions for the prosperous owners of sugar farms – and in the case of the Evergreen Plantation, excess wealth thankfully partnered with good taste. This plantation has received National Historic Landmark status for its elegant design. The complex of buildings ?on the plantation grounds tells a remarkable story of the skill with which craftsmen-some of whom were slaves themselves-constructed the property. Tours are spaced so that you will not feel crowded. The grounds beckon for a stroll after you’ve seen the buildings.
