Favela Chic
It could be argued that it’s a bit thoughtless to name your disco after someone else’s rather trying living conditions, but Favela Chic throws a decent party, and bigs up Brazilian culture while it’s at it. It’s not terribly chic, not by Parisian standards, but it is a great place to go for a dance when you’ve had your fill of Oberkampf grunge. The cocktails are effective, rather than sophisticated, and the music formula is two parts Latin and one part knowingly cheesy classics. Illuminated by upside-down lamps and a disco ball, the crowd dress up to party Brazilian-style and usually get quite messy, in a whooping, caipirinha- fuelled way. Expect queues as well as an entrance fee on Friday and Saturday nights, when the place is always kicking. The restaurant is strictly for fuel, with its bright lights, and food that’s only OK; there’s a sister establishment in Shoreditch, with the same look but a harder-edged music menu.
