Firstdraft is one of the art galleries in Sydney which were pioneers of the boom in artist-run initiatives in Australia, giving big breaks to budding artists since 1986 – many of whom have gone on to do great things, such as exhibiting at the Sydney Biennale or becoming gallery curators themselves. There are three – occasionally four – galleries displaying various exhibitions and Firstdraft also runs an interesting programme of Artist Talks with every exhibition, allowing audiences to learn more about the nuts and bolts behind the art. On the final Sunday of each show at 4pm, the exhibiting artist speaks about their work – it’s a great way to get a sense of who they are, understand the intricacies of their creativity and ask questions.
