Fish Market
Although people are generally dubious about eating fish in Kazakhstan – and fair enough, it is hundreds of miles from the nearest sea – it is possible to eat good seafood here. Run by the same group that runs the beach on the fifth floor of Khan Shatyr, Fish Market has a market-style display of fish that’s yours for the choosing. The formula is refreshingly straightforward: you pick your fish, then whether to have it grilled, poached, deep-fried and more, and finally which sauce to have with it, ranging from the classic tartare to the more adventurous chilli or curry. Luckily, you don’t have to dine in view of the dead, pouty fish but rather in nautical-themed surroundings, with lifeboat rings and sailor stripes all around. A sushi bar run by the same group is on the second floor. Perfect if you’re in a hurry to continue shopping, you can eat sitting at the bar and window-shop from afar all at the same time. They’ve thought of everything.
