Flying Fish

Many restaurants in Sydney have wonderfully distracting water views. The Flying Fish is lucky enough to be one of them but it also has a stylish outfit, with high, vaulted beams stretching above, heritage windows and a clever wall of wine display. Restaurant designer Michael McCann went to town when he commissioned Pam Morris to create two individual glass pendant sculpture chandeliers – the eye-catching 270-globe light sculpture suspended from the ceiling is aptly called ‘Reef Spawn’. As for the seafood, rest assured the fish couldn’t be more fresh had you leaned over and plucked it from the harbour yourself. Whether it’s an array of finely-sliced sashimi, a blue eye, flathead, poached scampi or Chef Peter Kuruvita’s signature Sri Lankan prawn curry (he grew up there), everything is artfully presented and the sommeliers know their craft – it’s a joy to eat here.
