Hg2 : The Hedonist

If the city’s theatres and restaurants don’t take your fancy, but you’re on the hunt for things to do in Prague, why not go and support the local team? Football isn’t the national game that it is in most European countries, even though the Czech team has been riding high in recent years. Domestic Czech teams rarely make it past the group stages of the Champions’ League or the first couple of rounds of the UEFA cup, since most of their better players choose to play abroad in England, Germany and Italy.

This means that the standard of play might be lower than expected, but matches can still be very entertaining and the Czech supporters are a passionate bunch.

AC Sparta Praha, Milady Horákové 98, Letná
Tel: 296 111 111  www.sparta.cz
The top team in the Czech Republic, although they have gone slightly downhill in recent years by European standards. You will probably see a good game in an impressive stadium, but the Premiership it’s not. The evident skinhead element is worth avoiding – go for the more expensive seats. Tickets from 100kc.

CU Bohemians Praha, Vrsovická 31, Vrsovice
Tel: 274 771 806  www.fc-bohemians.cz

One of the smaller Prague teams, the Bohemians are popular more with ex-pats, and always seem to be on the brink of insolvency. The team play passionately, and are nicknamed ‘The Kangaroos’ – you’ll have to ask them why.

FK Viktoria Zizkov, Seifertova 130, Zizkov
Tel: 222 722 045  www.fkvz.cz

This local Czech team has a tiny but loyal following. Since their stadium is reasonably close to the centre and has a friendly atmosphere, it is worth taking the time to pop along and double the crowd if you’ve got a few hours to catch a game. Tickets from 30kc.

SK Slavia Praha, Zatopkova 2, Strahov
Tel: 233 081 753  www.slavia.cz

SK Slavia Praha are undoubtedly skilled, although they are generally considered second to Sparta. This club is a favourite of the old republic and the middle classes.
