Fortyseven
Located just along from the Bocca della Verita, tucked behind the Campidoglio, Fortyseven’s position on a busy traffic artery may seem a little uncomfortable when compared to more central boutique hotels in Rome. But with easy access to Trastevere and Testaccio and the Centro just a 10-minute walk away, this hotel – housed in a former Fascist building – is well worth considering. Chic yet unassuming, it has a freshness that some of the city’s design-conscious establishments lack. The décor, wood and marble, with fairly masculine styling softened by injections of colourful flowers, make a clean break from the chintz without going too far in the minimalist direction. Each of the five floors pays tribute to a different 20th-century Italian artist, from Modigliani to Umberto Mastroianni and Piero Guccione. Take in the gorgeous sunsets over a cocktail and dinner at the Circus restaurant in the roof-garden.
