Looking for authentic places to stay in Cape Town? Your time in Four Rosmead, a meticulously restored listed monument, will not only be supremely comfortable, but will also provide a real experience of the city. Owner David Shorrock is not only a keen outdoorsman, but has his finger on the city’s more offbeat cultural pulse, and more than willing to share his knowledge with you. He also understands the boutique hotel ethos, and the atmosphere is at once discreet and personal. The eight individually-decorated rooms at Four Rosmead are all soothing, comfortable spaces; pared down rather than over-the-top, with interesting objets and artworks, many of them for sale. Rooms are categorized and priced according to size and the type of views you’ll enjoy-the best (deluxe) rooms have private balconies and views either over the city or towards Table Mountain, or both; all feature considerate touches (a ready-packed beach bag with towels and Frisbee, iPod docking station). It’s a grown-up kind of place, offering restrained comfort and luxury, with lots of space and attractive, mellow lounge areas that open out onto a terrace overlooking the intimate garden, a heated saltwater pool, and large honeymoon cottage. You really couldn’t ask for a smoother, more agreeable introduction to the Mother city.
