Galata Bridge Bars
The Galata Bridge is now in its fifth solid incarnation since 1845 and the current one, which dates from 1994, is hardly the prettiest. It does have one redeeming feature: rows of bars and restaurants along either side of its mezzanine level. Many are loud and tacky, others are naffly hip and favoured by out-of-town Turks keen to look cool, while some are the disco haunts of local geezers after hours. However, all are fun for a pint by day, while at dusk they’re great places to watch the sun set on the Golden Horn, which runs beneath the crossing. Later, if you want to keep up the rough ‘n’ ready tone for the evening, you can stroll to the small cooking establishments behind Galata’s fish market and get yourself some fresh, grilled fish.
