A classic Kreis 4 offering, Yves Neidermeier’s Gartenhof
opened in August 2010 to instant popularity. Understatedly cool, the décor is
thrift store chic, a mishmash of miss-matched tables and chairs with some
design-savvy touches – cream leather banquettes and smart Art Deco-style lights
– echoing the architectural heritage of the area.

Food-wise, the concept is
simplicity itself, three prix-fixe
three-course menus at a reasonable 45-50 CHF; there are no menus, the charming
waiters will run you through the meat, fish and vegetarian main courses,
starters and desserts are the same for each. Using the best fresh, seasonal
ingredients, the dishes change daily but are always excellent; from a perfectly
dressed salad to tender braised beef cheeks with pomme purée, delicately cooked bass and generously stuffed peppers,
there are no bad choices.

The scene is vibrant, very local and immensely relaxed,
order a bottle of wine, kick back and watch Kreis 4’s creative types in their
local living room.
