Hg2 : The Hedonist

George Street Diner

At the helm of this daredevil-red comfort food diner is a gutsy Irish dame called Ash Farrelly. She’s added her own flair to this retro eating experience with an Irish breakfast of homemade toasted soda bread and Belfast ham. Coffee is organic and Fairtrade, tea is Barry’s and lemonade is fresh. It’s got the blueprint of the perfect diner: a long counter with stumpy swivel chairs, four-person tables with red vinyl booths and a slim aisle for perky servers to operate in.

It’s close to the business district and George Brown University, so lunchtime gets chaotic with orders for lush salads (like strawberry and avocado) or pastas, bakes and stews. But a mid-week breakfast can be a very relaxed affair, for casual coffee over a newspaper. It scores extra kudos for its environmentally-friendly take-out packaging and non-bleached napkins.
