GinTonica at The Distillery

Picture a Dickensian gin palace reimagined for the 21st Century and you’ll get something a lot like Portobello Road’s The Distillery. Part-hotel, part-bar, part-restaurant – and yes – part-distillery, the four-storey former public house is a veritable temple to gin. Owned and operated by the acclaimed Portobello Gin brand, it’s an ambitious project that has paid off in spades, in no small part due to its liver-tickling array of gins from every corner of the planet.

The Distillery’s first floor restaurant, GinTonica, is a bright, sunny space with squishy navy banquettes that charmingly echo the Portobello Gin colours. The food offering is largely Basque, partly because the Spanish are huge gin consumers, but also thanks to head chef, Greg Lewis’ time spent in the Basque region. Expect light and cheery tapas-style plates, and order plenty. Choose from wafer-thin premium acorn-fed Iberico ham, lightly battered calamari with inky black aioli, beautifully golden, melt-in-the-mouth patatas bravas, and the bounciest inka grilled tiger prawns.

Don’t leave without heading two floors down to the basement to be schooled at the Ginsitute. At this experience, you’ll trace the spirit’s murky past down Hogarth’s Gin Lane and round it off by blending your own personal bottle using your desired botanicals. Still thirsty for more? Swing by their Resting Room bar on the ground floor for barrel-aged spirits and excellent international wines.
