Greens Restaurant
Run by the San Francisco Zen Center and opened near the end of the hippie heyday in the ’70s, Greens is a landmark establishment for highbrow vegetarian cuisine, a haven for ethical eating in San Francisco. The décor features incredible woods simply fashioned and presumably harvested without harm to the tree, or at least the forest. While the food is reliably good and features the best locally grown produce-much of it from the Zen Center’s own garden in Marin-the real attraction here is the spectacular, ground-level view of the water, Golden Gate Bridge, and Marin Headlands. Where else can you have all-vegetarian food in an airy dining room and look straight out at Marina sailboats, the great ocher towers of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the lush hillsides of the Marin Headlands? Greens has taken vegetarian cookery to new levels. Expect a crowd that loves to eat its vegetables and knows how to appreciate organic produce, as well as the handcrafted wood interior. Reserve for lunch or Sunday brunch to make the most of the view. You’ll be well situated for a walk along the Marina Green afterward.
