There are few restaurants in Stockhom that concentrate exclusively on the type of American staples at which this Gamla Stan spot excels. As a result, despite its location at the centre of the cobbled Old Town tourist trap, Grill Ruby is crammed with locals.
rnThe Grill has no pretentiousness or affectation; instead it provides a haven for those trying to escape the airs and graces of many restaurants in Östermalm, while remaining more up-market than the more alternative joints of Sodermalm. The local feel is reflected in the lack of an English menu – although don’t worry about this, as a translation of ‘sirloin’ or ‘fillet’ shouldn’t prove too testing.
rnDécor is relaxed, and the mood warm and cosy: American movie posters featuring Bonnie and Clyde plaster the pale green wooden slatted walls, while Aretha Franklin plays in the background. Mix your meat and veg as you see fit, with the menu divided into clear sections to make life easier for all (although this does change slightly for Saturday brunch).
rnAt weekends it is best to book, but otherwise turn up with a newspaper, sit at the bar and wait your turn.
