Hg2 : The Hedonist

One of those San Francisco diners that is as rich in history as it is in decadent post-barhopping eat, Grubstake is housed in a former railcar that used to run on the key line between San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland and this institution is a favourite among locals who have been carousing on the Polk Street strip. Cocktail-induced cravings for fried food can be satisfied with onion rings or jalapeño poppers from the appetizer menu, while those with more ravenous appetites can dig into a multitude of burger options, Philly cheesesteaks, or a French dip. What really sets this diner apart, though, is its selection of Portuguese specialities, including prawns sautéed with garlic, and eggs served with linguica, French fries, and toast. Booze-fuelled nights on the Polk Street strip often end with a meal at Grubstake, so you’re likely to see other denizens digging into any and all forms of grease to try to combat their hangovers. Check out the Portuguese section of the menu for some more unexpected options-that will still hit the spot.
